As an artist, I am inspired by the world around me. I am inspired by nature, by people, by movements, and by moments. I hope to capture unique angles of the world, while still adding my own opinions and commentary, through my art. In doing ceramics and photography, I feel that I am doing my part in the world to stimulate discussions, fight for what I believe in, and create beauty in unexpected ways. My most prominent themes are the ways nature affects humanity, and the way humanity affects nature. When I see my artwork, I hope those who view it feel empowered, self-reflective, and thoughtful.
Working in clay has given me a sense of permanence of my art. What I create remains standing for years to come, and whatever message I intend to convey through my art persists as well. I consider each piece I make in clay to be a culmination of my most intense ideas mixed with creativity and passion for activism. Clay as a medium has given me the opportunity to speak out on what I believe in and love, without even using my voice. Photography is another medium I am passionate about pursuing. Through the lens of a camera, I hope to inspire the viewer to see beyond everyday life, and question the world around them. My ultimate goals as an artist in both of these mediums are to inspire others the same way my favorite artists have inspired me, and encourage thoughtful discussion about society and the way we live our lives.
I am inspired by artists such as Diane Arbus, Jacob Riis, Ruth Duckworth, and Dorothea Lange, who challenged society and conventionality through their art. Their work led to social, political, and cultural changes affecting today, and I hope my art work does the same for the future.
